Bridgeport, NJ – It was Belmont’s Garage Night at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park and Ryan Godown, Jr., Tom Wills, Jr., Kevin Nagy and Amanda Angstadt each added another win to their season total in Saturday night action that saw four divisions of competition.

Ryan Godown was the flag-to-flag winner in the South Jersey Overhead Door 602 Crate Sportsman feature event after drawing the pole. Godown made it look easy even though several cautions brought the field back to the leader and closed in the ranks.

Brett Belmont had one of three of the Belmont Garage sponsored entries in second through the first fourteen laps of the race before current point leader, Sammy Martz, Jr. took over the spot on a lap fifteen restart. Travis Hill had the Cogdill No. 98 racing among the top five throughout the twenty-five lap event, running as high as second but ultimately finishing behind Godown and Martz.

Mechanical issues plagued several drivers that raced in the top five during the main event. 2021 Rookie Champion, Ethan Bill raced within the top five until mechanical failure sidelined him at past the halfway mark. With five laps to go, Godown led Martz,, Hill, Steve Kemery, Tom Sherby and Kyle Belmont. The field took the white flag before the caution came out for Brett Belmont who spun due to a tire going down on his No. 14. While under caution, Kemery stopped in turn two -his race was over due to a broken axle adaptor.

Godown led the way to the checkered for his fourth Bridgeport win of the season followed by Martz, Hill, Sherby and Kyle Belmont who raced his way into the top five late in the race. Jim Dallett had another strong effort, finishing sixth. Joe Toth brought his Belmont Garage sponsored No. 9 home in seventh with Matt Ellery, Sean Metz and Howie Finch rounding out the top ten at the flag.

Godown was thankful to return to the Weaknecht Archery Victory Lane. “Thanks to everyone who helps on the car…We were really struggling in July but so far August is looking better,” the feature winner stated.

Kevin Nagy did it again!! Nagy raced into the lead of the Delaware Auto Exchange Mid Atlantic Sprint Series on the first lap and never looked back as he collected his fifth Bridgeport victory of the season bringing his win total to eight for 2021.

Nagy told announcer, Barry Angstadt about how he is not comfortable speaking in front of people. Words haven’t been necessary as Nagy’s racing has really delivered the message so far this season.

Larry McVay raced for the lead on lap one before Nagy put the No. 45 out in front off of turn four. The caution waved on lap three for Jenna Shotz in turn one, bringing the field back together for a double file restart. That brought third place Ryan Stillwaggon right up to Nagy and McVay for a three car battle for the lead on the restart. Cody West raced in fourth with Zack Bealer and Aiden Borden racing for fifth.

Christian Rumsey went for a wild ride in turn four with six laps scored. Rumsey was not injured.

McVay and Stillwaggon challenged Nagy on each of the restarts but Nagy was able to pull away under green flag conditions.

Nagy led the way to the checkered flag over McVay, Stillwaggon, Bealer and West with Rick Stief, Tim Iulg, Tim Tanner, Aidan Borden and Eddie Wagner rounding out the top ten. When Cody West didn’t make weight after the feature, his finish was dropped to eighteenth, moving everyone up a spot and adding CJ Faison to the top ten.

West’s Fred Kennedy No. 56 was heavily damaged the previous Saturday when a titanium bolt that connects the drag link to the steering arm broke. The team spent many hours rebuilding the car for Saturday night’s race and never got a chance to scale the car.

A $300 bounty was posted by Palmco Motorsports and Wheelsof Speed.com for any driver who was able to win, provided Nagy was competing at the checkered flag. Nagy was also eligible for the bounty if he would forego the draw and start in twelfth. Nagy elected to take his chances with the draw.

Tom Wills, Jr. raced from his third place start and into the lead on the first lap to win a wire-to-wire feature in the Bridgeport Motorsports Park Street Stocks. Jeff Dirkes did not make it an easy win as he and Wills raced side by side on several occasions

Wills took the win over Dirkes, Mike Hughes, Jr., Jeramy Doerr and Nick Sandone III. Doerr rebounded after a trip to the pits. Wills followed the strick instructions after last week’s win to wash the car, put it on jack stands and to not change a thing.

Michael Beckett led the first lap of the All Star Slingshot feature after a three wide battle for the lead with Amanda Angstadt and Ashley Therien.

One lap later, Angstadt completed the pass for the lead. Beckett was able to hang with the leader but was not able to challenge for the lead before the checkered flag waved. Becket finished second over Mark Kiefert who was making his first start at Spirit this season. Ryan Biello crossed the line in fourth but did not make weight following the feature. That moved Ryan Davey into fourth and Tim Franks into fifth.

Regular shows are on tap for both Spirit Auto Center Speedway and Bridgeport Motorsports Park next weekend with the Foley Cat Modifieds returning for the Saturday night program. Then on Saturday, August 21, look for the Super Late Models make their first ever appearance on the Bridgeport high banks, joining the Modifieds, 602 Crate Sportsman, Street Stocks, 4&8 Cylinder Enduro Cars and a Saturday afternoon matinee for the All Star Slingshots.

Bridgeport, NJ – The Foley Cat Modifieds joined the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midgets for a mid-week double header at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park.  The event, sponsored by Liberty Kenworth of South Jersey, marked the first appearance of the USAC Midgets on the high banks of Bridgeport’s 4/10 mile track and their only race in the state of New Jersey.   

 After multiple second place finishes, Alex Yankowski raced to the win in the thirty lap Modified feature.  Tanner Thorson became the third different winner in race number three of Eastern Midget Week.  Chris Windom and Daison Pursley were the winners of the two previous events.  

Alex Yankowski garnered the headlines last fall when he won the first Danny Serrano 100.  It was a huge victory for the then sixteen year old driver who defeated a stellar field of competitors.  Yankowski got as much press for his impressive win as he did for his spectacular finish when the feature winner tangled with a lapped car on his cool down lap and flipped in front of the starter’s stand.  Yankowski escaped unscathed but his first win certainly gained attention in the headlines!

Thursday night’s win wasn’t nearly as spectacular but it certainly was a huge breakthrough for the young driver from Coventry Township, PA.  Yankowski has just two Bridgeport finishes outside the top ten.  His two second place finishes were behind five time feature winner, Ryan Godown.

Yankowski drew the pole for the start of the thirty lap Modified feature.  Ryan Godown drew the outside pole,  The two drivers raced to the starting line at the end of the first lap side by side but Godown moved out in front on lap two.  Godown had the lead but Yankowski was not far behind, keeping the black No. 26 well within his range of sight.  Racing behind the leaders in the early laps were Frank Cozze, Neal Williams and Sam Martz.  

Cozze pulled off the track on lap ten as Billy Pauch, Jr. and Dominick Buffalino battled for fifth behind the leaders.  

Godown led the way through halfway but two laps later and a puff of smoke, Godown was off the pace and headed to the infield.  Yankowski was the new race leader on lap seventeen and never faltered.   The positions behind the leader continued to be up for grabs as Williams and Martz now battled for second while Pauch, Jr. and Buffalino raced for fourth.  

Pauch, Jr. had just reeled in Martz in third when the caution waved for Joseph Watson who had a flat.  Watson headed to the pits for a tire change and returned to join at the end of the field for the single file, three lap shootout.

Yankowski raced to the checkered flag followed closely by Williams.  Martz finished third after a battle with Buffalino in the final laps.  Pauch rounded out the top five.  

Emerson Axsom led the way for the first four laps of the USAC Midget feature but it was Tanner Thorson who raced into the lead following a lap five restart.  The one and only caution flag came on lap five when Zach Daum lost an engine between turns three and four and experienced a big flare up when the engine left go.

Thorson rolled the outside to gain the lead on the restart but it wasn’t long before Thorson had dropped to the bottom of the track.  And that’s where Thorson stayed for nearly all of the remaining laps, even while racing through traffic.  “The bottom just had so much grip,” Thorson explained.  “I went down there to feel around and that was the place to be,” Thorson added.  

Thorson raced ahead of the field and took the checkered flag nine seconds ahead of second place, Thomas Meseraull.  “These midgets will run the bottom pretty good,” Meseraull observed.  “I wasn’t really set up to run down there but it worked.”  Meseraull raced by Axsom to take over second just a few laps after Thorson took the lead.

Axsom raced in third until Buddy Kofoid raced to the inside on lap twenty-one and came away with the position.  Axsom was then challenged by Chris Windom who raced everywhere from the bottom of the track to up against the wall as he made his way through the top five.  Windom moved up to fourth in the final laps with Axsom finishing fifth – his first non-podium finish of the week.

Kevin Thomas Jr. finished sixth followed by Cannon McIntosh, Alex Bright, Chase Randall and Justin Grant.

Bridgeport, NJ – Ryan Godown raced to his fifth Bridgeport Motorsports Park victory of the season in the Foley Cat Modifieds on Church’s Auto Parts Night at the races. Kevin Nagy picked up his seventh win of the season – his fourth on Bridgeport high banks in Delaware Auto Exchange Mid Atlantic Sprint Series action. Tom Wills, Jr. came up with the win in the Bridgeport Motorsports Park Street Stock victory while Amanda Angstadt earned her third win of the season in the Saturday Matinee for the All Star Slingshots.

Mike Franz led the field of Modifieds to the green flag and led the way from the start. With two laps scored, the caution waved for Billy Pauch who slowed with a flat tire. Pauch pitted and returned for the green with Franz leading the way over Neal Williams, Tom Moore, Jr. and Joe Toth. Franz was on the gas and led through lap nine with Williams using a crossover move to take the lead on lap ten. Godown raced behind the leaders after clearing Alex Yankowski for third. Ryan Krachun ran in fifth on lap ten.

Williams led laps ten and eleven but it was Godown who used the momentum out of turn two to take the lead on a lap twelve restart. Yankowski took on Williams for second on lap thirteen while Dominick Buffalino and Ryan Krachun battled side by side for fourth.

Godown drove away from the field. The lightning fast No. 26 sponsored by Camp Out and Ellery’s Pub and Grill made it all look easy as Godown raced ahead of the field. Yankowski kept Godown within his sights but was never able to get to the leader. Buffalino raced back into third just past half way but was not able to close the distance on the top two. After a heated battle with Williams and Joseph Watson, Krachun finished fourth with Watson taking fifth. Williams finished a strong sixth followed by Sammy Martz, Frank Cozee, Franz and Billy Pauch who rebounded to a top ten finish after his earlier pit stop.

Neal Williams and the South Jersey Overhead Door No. 0 set fast time during pre-race hot laps.

“We really had a good car tonight,” Godown explained. “It was better than it’s been the last couple of weeks.” Godown last visited the Weaknecht Archery Victory Lane in mid-June. “When you get to the front you can concentrate on hitting your marks and just keep rolling,” the feature winner added. “You don’t have to worry about traffic.”

Kevin Nagy has been on a roll and is having a great 2021 season to date. After polesitter, Aidan Borden slowed before taking the green, it was Cody West who led the field to the green flag on the complete restart. Dave Brown quickly closed in and raced into the lead on lap one.

Brown led the way through lap nine. The races was red flagged when Zac Vickers tangled with another car on the homestretch and flipped. Vickers was transported to the local hospital for treatment for a leg injury.

The restart saw Nagy on Brown’s back bumper and then into the lead for lap eleven. Two laps later, the race was again red flagged when West made hard contact with the second turn wall after a part failure. West was not injured but the Kennedy No. 56 was heavily damaged.

Nagy, Brown and Ryan Stillwaggon made it a three car race for the lead with Nagy pulling away after the restart.

Nagy raced to the checkered for his fourth Bridgeport win of the season over Brown, Stillwaggon, Tim Tanner and Larry McVay.
Zach Bergoff finished sixth followed by Eddie Wagner, Rory Janny, Kristina Pratt and Jeff Geiges.

After an engine failure just a few weeks ago, two time Street Stock Champion, Tom Wills, Jr. thought his 2021 season was over but friends through racing came to his aid and Wills repaid them with a feature win on Saturday night.

Wills led from the start but when the caution was needed on the last lap, Wills had last week’s winner, TJ Henry on his back bumper. Wills had a good start and then won the drag race off of turn four to capture his fourth win of the season. Henry finished a close second followed by Jeramy Doerr, Jeff Dirkes and Ron Frees. Frees, a former track champion, returned to Bridgeport to prepare for the Street Stock Nationals being presented on the high banks later this season.

Amanda Angstadt took the lead from Michael Beckett on a restart with eight laps complete. Once out in front, Angstadt had little trouble keeping the lead. Angstadt took the win over Beckett, John Phillip, Ryan Davey and Dave Morrell.

Bridgeport, NJ – Five-time Bridgeport Speedway Champion, Ryan Watt, captured the South Jersey Shootout – the first Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series Fueled by Sunoco Short Track Super Series event to be held on the high banks of the Bridgeport Motorsports Park. It was also Watt’s first victory on the track designed by Doug Rose and company. “We’ve been so close here so many times,” Watt explained. “I think we have like six seconds here – we’ve just never been able to seal the deal,” Watt noted from the Weaknecht Archery Victory Lane.

Tuesday night’s event was the fifth STSS race to be run at Bridgeport. Three on the old 5/8th mile track won by Rick Laubach, Wade Hendrickson and Stewart Friesen, one on the 3/8th mile track won by Jeff Strunk and now Watt on the 4/10 mile configuration. Ellery’s Pub & Grill were the sponsors for this historic event.

The Modified feature event ran green to checkered in just under fifteen minutes. This was the sixth non-stop race of the season for the Foley Cat Modifieds and the first non-stop extra distance event of 2021. It was the third consecutive non-stop Modified feature event – that’s 110 non-stop laps of feature action.

“The car was good tonight right out of the box,” the feature winner explained. Watt qualified through his heat race, finishing second and in a redraw spot. Then Watt drew the outside pole.

Polesitter, Rick Laubach grabbed the lead on the start leaving Watt to battle Matt Shepperd for second. Laubach was able to pull away as Watt bested Shepperd for second. Current STSS point leader, Mike Mahaney ran fourth with Stewart Friesen rounding out the top ten through the first five laps.

By lap fifteen, Laubach had caught the back of the field as Watt reeled in the leader. Shepperd and Friesen were door to door, battling for third. The two drivers use slide jobs and crossovers to advance their positions. Friesen grabbed third only to have Shepperd battle back to regain the position on the next lap. Meanwhile, Mahaney rounded out the top five.

Laubach took the crossed flags at halfway but it was Watt who was out in front the next time around. Alex Yankowski was able to take away fifth from Mahaney as he raced in the top five.

Shepperd passed Laubach for second on lap thirty-three. With fifteen laps to go, Laubach,, Friesen and Yankowski were racing three wide for third.

As the laps counted down, Watt’s biggest hurdle was dealing with lapped traffic. With the quality of the cars competing, even the lapped cars were fast and therefore, were not easy to pass. Watt battled throughout the remaining laps to put Frank Cozze down a lap but the veteran driver from Wind Gap, PA was not going quietly. Watt was side by side with Cozze and the Renaldo No 401 but each time, Cozze was able to pull ahead. Danny Bouc played a similar role in the final laps. That allowed Shepperd to close in on the leader with Friesen closing in on Shepperd.

Watt navigated the final laps to perfection and sailed to the checkered flag for the win in the Design for Vision, Sunglass Central Modified fifty lapper. Shepperd trailed Watt to the flag followed by Friesen, Yankowski and Laubach. Mahaney, Anthony Perrego, Ryan Godown, Max McLaughlin and Dominick Buffalino completed the top ten in the running order at the end of fifty laps.

“I thought I had a pretty good shot,” Shepperd explained until the No. 9s developed a push late in the race. “I’m glad to come out of here with a second.” Shepperd added.

Not to be outdone, the Belmont’s Garage 602 Crate Sportsman, ran twenty-five non-stop green flag laps with Ryan Godown, Jr. leading from green to checkered in the non-stop event that was completed in just over seven and a half minutes.

Ryan Godown, Jr. led from the wave of the green to the wave off the checkered. The win gave Godown, Jr. is first “big” check. “I didn’t know where anyone was or where they were running,” Godown, Jr. explained. “I was finally able to get a look at the lap counter and saw twenty-one. I was glad to see that,” the young driver explained.

Brian Krummel raced the Cooney No. 12C to a second place finish over Sammy Martz, Jr., Ajay Potrzebowski, Jr. and Michael White. Ryan Simmons finished sixth followed by Joe Toth, Adam White, Ryan HIggs and Stephen Kemery.

It was a great show – three wide racing throughout the pack. A two division show completed in less than three hours with forty cars in each of the two divisions. The happy race rans left the speedway with a lot to talk about until their next race.
