Bridgeport, NJ – Three full days of sprint car action featuring four different divisions of sprint cars!  Who could ask for more?

The final day of Sprintoberfest competition sponsored by Eastern Rigging left nothing to the imagination and delivered everything a racer could ask for!

Gio Scelzi raced to the win in the forty lap main event for the 410 Sprints after setting a new one lap record on Friday that was then broken by Anthony Macri on Sunday.  “This is such an awesome race track,” Scelzi related.  “I like to come here.”  Scelzi had competed on the High Banks on several other occasions.

The Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Wingless Sprints had the crowd on the edge of their seats as rookie, Bobby Butler led thirty-nine of the forty laps before getting up on the cushion and flipping wildly while racing with two of the best – Briggs Danner and Alex Bright.  Danner led just the final lap to pick up his twelfth win in his Championship season.

Devon Borden left the High Banks on Sunday after racing to his first Bridgeport win in the United Racing Club (URC) forty lap main event.  His Shuttleworth Stehman racing team gave the young Raymond, WA driver excellent equipment all weekend as they also picked up a top five finish in the 410 feature event.

The West Coast drivers certainly drew attention in the 410 events.  After picking up the twenty-five lap win on Saturday night, Cory Eliason went right to the front in Sunday’s feature,   Eliason started to the outside of polesitter, Devon Borden, and raced into the lead at the wave of the green.  Justin Peck raced into second on lap four and chased Eliason all the way through lap twenty-three.  The caution waved at that point when the leader slowed with mechanical issues.  This caution was then designated as the mandatory break when the teams were allowed to add fuel and make adjustments to the cars.

Unfortunately, it became evident that Eliason would relinquish his lead as his race came to an end after a mechanical failure.  As the caution waved, smoke could be seen from Peck’s Buch Motorsports No. 13.  His race also came to an end at the break.  Third place Gio Scelzi inherited the lead when the field went back to green flag racing.  

Scelzi referred to these events as a “Christmas gift” but he was able to capitalize by racing to the win and the $15,000 prize.  Borden raced in second behind the leader until Danny Dietrich moved up to second with a great move on a lap twenty-five restart.  One lap later, Kyle Reinhardt raced by Dietrich to take over second.  

It was Lance Dewease who was on the move in the final laps as he raced from fifth to third just before the checkered.

Scelzi took the win over Reinhardt who did all he could to pick up the win in his home state.  Dewease grabbed third on the final lap from Borden who finished fourth ahead of Dietrich.  Ryan Smith finished sixth followed by Davie Franek, Troy Wagaman, Lucas Wolfe and Dominic Melair.  Lucas Wolfe was the hard charger of the race.  

Indy Race Parts heat races were won by Borden, Eliason and Scelzi.  Borden picked up the win in the five lap Dash over Macri and Eliason.

Macri set fast time during timed hot laps, setting a new one lap record for the 410 sprints at 12.459 seconds.

In just his third race with the USAC East Coast Wingless Sprints, Bobby Butler showed himself as a serious contender.  After tranferring through his qualifier on Saturday, Butler started from the pole in the forty lap main event on Sunday.  Butler quickly moved out in front of the field at the wave of the green.  Aiden Borden, Joey Amantea, Kyle Spence and Alex Bright raced in the top five behind Butler with five laps scored.  ‘

Amantea and Bright moved up to second and third by lap ten as Briggs Danner broke into the top five.  Butler continued to drive away from the field with his 358 power plant – not 360 like the other competitors.  

Bright moved into second and then closed the gap on the leader as they raced through heavy lapped traffic.  With twenty-two laps scored, the caution waved for Preston Lattomus, giving the leaders a clear track ahead but also erasing Butler’s advantage, moving Alex Bright and the Rodota Trucking No. 20 right on his back bumper.  

Bright challenged for the lead with multiple slide jobs but Butler was able to answer with crossover moves each time.  While Butler and Bright battled, Amantea and Danner were racing hard for third.  

With ten laps to go, Butler had both Bright and Danner in his wake.  After Bright challenged for the lead with slide jobs, Danner countered and took over second on lap thirty-four.  

Five to go and Butler was still holding his challengers at bay.  “I knew I had to run hard,” Butler explained.  On lap thirty-nine, Butler got into the cushion but had a enough room to correct and hold the lead as he and Danner raced down the backstretch.  The leaders took the white flag and raced into turn one.  This time, when Butler raced hard into the corner, he caught the track the wrong way, causing the car to turn toward the wall and get up in the air.  Butler literally flipped on top of the Heffner No. 5G .  “I couldn’t believe we didn’t have more damage,” Danner stated.  “Just the front bumper.”  

The red flag was thrown.  Butler climbed from the car on his own but later elected to be checked out at the hospital.  The field realigned for the one lap shootout with a scene that has been repeated many times this season – Danner in the lead with Bright on his back bumper.

Danner raced to his twelfth win of the season followed by Bright, Amantea, Spence and Kenny Miller who rebounded from a flat tire during the red flag.  Colin White finished sixth with Steve Drevicki, Christian Bruno, Jonathan Swanson and Ed Aiken completing the top ten.

Devon Borden chalked up several firsts with his forty lap win in the URC main event on Sunday.  It was his first win at Bridgeport as well as the state of New Jersey, his first 360 win on the East Coast and his first win with URC.  

Borden took the green from inside the second row and Jordan Thomas and Anthony Macri leading the field to the green flag.  Macri dove to the inside of turn three to grab the lead on the first lap. 

After visiting Victory Lane a few mintues earlier, Briggs Danner raced the winged Heffner No. 5G into second on lap two but Borden fought back to regain the runner-up position.  Thomas and Dallas Shott rounded out the top five with five laps on the books.  

Shott moved up to fourth as Tyler Ross broke into the top five before ten laps were scored.  

The number thirteen wasn’t unlucky for Borden as he drove into the lead, passing Macri on lap thirteen.  

On lap twenty, Borden raced into turn one and quickly came up on the car of BRandon McGough.  McGough stood the No. 669 on it’s tail, right in front of the race leader.  Borden made it through the incident unscathed as the red flag was thrown.  McGough was not injured.

The field regrouped after the fuel stop to complete the forty lap distance.  

Borden went right back to work, maintaining the lead and pulling away from the field.  Shott moved up to third with Danner and Robbie Stillwaggon completing the top five as Borden again caught the back of the field.  

Borden was flawless on the final caution with just ten laps to go.  Borden drove to the checkered flag, earning his first trip to Weaknecht Archery Victory Lane with his crew to celebrate their win.  “This is really awesome,” Borden exclaimed.  “The racing is really good here and it’s good for the fans too!”

Macri finished second followed by Shott, Danner and Ross.  Robbie Stillwaggon finished sixth followed by Josh Weller, DJ Christie, Troy Betts and Kyle Smith.

Sprintoberfest was a weekend that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Bridgeport, NJ – Cory Eliason dove to the inside of Justin Peck on lap nine to take the lead in the twenty-five lap Capitol Renegade 410 feature event on Day two of the Sprintober Fest weekend sponsored by Specialty Rigging at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park.

Eric Jennings made it two for two with his second win of the weekend in the North East Wingless Sprints. Briggs Danner picked up wins in both his USAC East Coast Wingless fifteen lap qualifier and his fifteen lap qualifier with the United Racing Club. (URC) Austin Graby picked up the win in the second USAC EC qualifier after competing in just a handful of races during his rookie season. Jordan Thomas raced to the win in the second qualifier for the URC competitors.

Justin Peck raced to the win in the 410 Dash, earning the pole position start in the twenty-five lap main event. Peck raced out in front at the wave of the green but Eliason quickly moved in to challenge for the lead. Peck held off the challenge and raced to a lead of several car lengths. Eliason challenged Peck again on a lap eight restart. Peck was able to regain the lead but Eliason was out in as the leaders headed to the start finish line to complete lap nine. Peck had a tire going down from this point of the race and managed to maintain his runner-up finish all the way to the checkered flag.

Anthony Macri, Gio Scelzi and Kyle Reinhardt battled for the third position through the second half of the race with Scelzi securing third over Macri and Reinhardt.

The checkered flag waved for Eliason who was making his first ever start on the High Banks. Peck finished second, maneuvering the Buch No. 13 with a tire that was going flat during the final fifteen laps. The tire was on the rim by the time Peck made it back to his pit area.
Scelzi. who set a new one lap record for the 410s on Friday night, finished third followed by Macri and Reinhardt. Tyler Ross, Danny Dietrich, Lance Dewease, Lucas Wolfe and Paulie Colagiovanni completed the top ten in the running order at the end of twenty-five laps.

Eliason, who traveled from his home state of California to compete in the first Sprintober Fest, was pleased to add a victory to a season that did not meet his expectations. “I didn’t make it here with the All Stars,” Eliason related. “This is a bad ass place!” HIs focused now was on the $15,000 prize money for the win Sunday.

Aiden Borden led the first lap of the USAC EC first qualifier but it was Briggs Danner who raced into the lead on the second lap. Danner drove away from the competition, leaving Borden to battle for second with Kyle Spence.

A lap nine caution restacked the field for the restart, erasing Danner’s lead. Bright was able to take over second in the final laps but was unable to catch Danner as they raced to the checkered. Danner took the win over Bright, Borden, Spence and Jonathan Swanson. Colin White and Preston Lattomus followed in the final two transfer spots.

Austin Graby grabbed the lead in the second qualifier for the wingless 360 sprints and led all the way to the checkered. Bobby Butler quickly moved into second where he spent the remaining laps, chasing the leader. Kenny Miller III raced inside and outside to finish third followed by Joey Amantea and Chris Allen. Eric Jennings and three time USAC EC Champion, Steven Drevicki raced into the final two transfer spots.

Anthony Macri led lap one of the first URC qualifier but Danner raced from his fourth place start to take the lead on lap two. Macri was able to close in on the leader as they raced through lapped traffic but even a big slide job in the final corners of the race was not enough to overtake Danner. Devon Borden finished third over Tyler Ross and Jason Schultz.

Josh Weller led the way in a second URC qualifier, leading the first nine laps of the race. Jordan Thomas raced into the lead on lap two and never looked back as he raced to the fifteen lap win. Weller crossed the line in second over Troy Betts, Dallas Schott and Mike Melaire,

Eric Jennings was able to return to Victory Lane for the second time during the weekend as he drove to the win in the twenty lap NEWS feature. Nick Dagostino took the lead at the wave of the green.

D’Agostino led the way for the first nine laps. A lap ten restart saw D’Agostino take the outside for the restart but Jennings quickly went to the outside of Dagostino as they exited turn two. Jennings had the lead as the field received the crossed flags.

Mike Thompson raced into second dropping D’Agostino to third.

Rich Mellor raced into third on a lap thirteen restart, trailing Jennings and Thompson. Brendan Hires raced into fourth in the final laps.

Jennings drove to the checkered for his second win of the weekend followed by Thompson, Mellor, Hires and D’Agostino.

Bridgeport, NJ – It’s a sprint car fan’s dream! Where else could you go and see four divisions of sprint cars in a single racing program? Pretty sure the answer is nowhere!

Friday night Sprintober Fest action sponsored by Specialty Rigging opened the three day weekend program with the winged 410s of the PA Posse and more, the wingless 360s of the USAC East Coast Wingless, the winged 360s of the United Racing Club and the wingless sprints of the North East Wingless Sprints powered by 602 Crate Engines. There were timed hot laps for the 410s and both wingless and winged 360s, twenty lap Non-Winners races for each of those divisions as well as qualifying heats and feature for the NEWS competitors.

Gio Scelzi , Anthony Macri and Cory Eliason set the pace in the three sessions of timed hot laps for the 410s, with each earning a starting position for Saturday’a Dash.

Davie Franek took the lead on the second lap and dominated the twenty lap Non-winners race for the 410 Sprints. Franek cleared pole sitter Jordan Lynch and then drove away from the field to pick up the win over Tyler Ross. Ross, who raced by Jordan Lynch to take over second on lap thirteen, spent the final seven laps, closing the gap on the leader. It was Franek for the win over Ross, Lynch, Ryan Smith and Austin Bishop.

USAC EC 2022 Champion, Briggs Danner proved that he can race with a wing as he set fast time among the URC competitors on Friday night in the first set of timed hot laps. Jordan Thomas set the fast time in the second group of cars. Both drivers earned a redraw position in one of Saturday’s qualifiers.

Joe Kata picked up the win in the URC Non-Winners race after taking the lead from Mike Thompson at the halfway mark. A former Junior Slingshot National Champion, Kata was thrilled to put his team in Weaknecht Archery Victory Lane at the end of twenty laps, crediting the hard work of his crew for the accomplishment.

Thompson crossed the finish line in second followed by Buddy Schweibinz, the Mid Atlantic Sprint Series 2022 Champion who was making his first start in a winged 360 event. DJ Christie finished fourth with Tyler Ross rounding out the top five.

With two drivers accounting for seventeen of the twenty events this season, there were plenty of drivers in the USAC East Coast Wingless Sprints who were looking forward to getting to Victory Lane. Austin Graby led the field through lap one before Bobby Butler raced by to take the lead. Kenny Miller III raced into second on lap thirteen and set his sights on the leader.

Miller raced to the outside of Butler as they completed lap twelve and then took over the lead on the next circuit.

Miller led the way to the checkered over Butler, Kyle Spence, Austin Graby and Christian Bruno.

The NEWS Sprints raced in a complete show of heats and feature with Eric Jennings racing to the win in the twenty lap feature event.

Mike Dagostino used the outside to propel himself into the lead on the initial start. Brenden Hires raced his way into the lead on lap four as Eric Jennings took over second. With five laps to go, the leaders raced into lapped traffic and Jenning was able to race by Hires as they picked their way through traffic.

Jennings took the win over Hires, Dagostino, Rich Mellor and Brian Spencer. Jennings, who felt that he gave a win away earlier this year in NEWS previous Bridgeport appearance, gained some justification with this victory.

Bridgeport, NJ – The Bridgeport Motorsports Park offered a full slate of racing on Saturday as the Second Annual Street Stock Nationals highlighted the five division program.

Lernerville Track Champion, Tyler Dietz raced to the victory in the $10,000 to win one hundred lap Street Stock Nationals. Dave Brown raced to the win in the fifty lap F&W Grafix Fall Classic in memory of Bob Schweibinz for the Delaware Auto Exchange Mid Atlantic Sprint Series (MASS). Frank Cozze picked up the win in the Underdog 30 sponsored by Fire Management Control of PA and Rent Equip of Delaware. Joe Garey Jr. made it a clean sweep in the John Blewett Inc. Scrap & Waste Recycling Four Cylinder feature event. The Vintage cars were also on hand as part of the Saturday program.

Two Last Chance Qualifiers were run to complete the starting line up for the Street Stock Nationals. Billy Walker traveled all the way from Alabama to compete in the Street Stock Nationals and was the winner of the first Last Chance Qualifier. Bridgeport regular, Drew Brocklebank picked up the win in the second Last Chance Qualifier.

Chris Murray of the Devil Bowl Speedway in Vermont led the field to the green flag from his pole position start and led the early laps of the race. Murray was also the reason for the first caution after making contact with the wall, sidelining Murray from the event. Tyler Dietz took over at that point with Kyle Daneen racing in second. Jasen Gessaman, a Hagerstown, MD regular, made his way through the top five and took over second on a lap twenty-one restart. Gessaman pursued Dietz, lap after lap. The leader couldn’t afford to make any mistakes because Gessaman was right there to take advantage of any opportunity. Gessaman had a lot of experience in this situation after he pressured Jimmy Blewett throughout the 100 lapper a year ago.

Dietz led the way through halfway followed by Gessaman, John Carpenter, Shane Wolf and Daneen. The caution was thrown at halfway as the cars filed onto the quarter mile track to the attention of the crews. The ten minute clock ran during the break with the field returning to a double file restart at the end of ten minutes.

Dietz went back to work with Gessaman hot on his trail but Wolf came to life and made it a three car race. Carpenter and Jimmy Blewett completed the top five with Ryan Smith looking for his opportunity to get into the top five.

With forty laps to go, Blewett headed to the attention of the Ormsbee crew for tires with left side flats. Blewett’s race came to an end with about twenty laps remaining when the drive shaft went on the No. 19.

Gessaman raced side by side with Dietz on a lap seventy-seven restart and came away with the lead. Gessaman led the way until Dietz was able to regain the spot on a lap eighty restart.

As the laps counted down, several competitors were getting stronger. Ryan Smith raced in the top five while Josh Bassino had his hands full with defending Bridgeport Champion, Tom Wills, Jr. as they battled for sixth. Daneen slowed with mechanical ills on lap ninety-four with Wolf’s mount going up in smoke just moments later. Both drivers were racing within the top five with ten laps remaining.

Dietz raced to the $10,000 payday followed by Gessaman and Smith, both finished in these same positions a year ago. Bussino won the drag race with Wills for fourth while Wills completed the top five. Wills was the first of the Bridgeport competitors to cross the finish line. Three generations of Spider Ensingers competed over the weekend but it was Spider Jr. who finished sixth followed by 2022 Bridgeport Track Champion, Lee Allen, Bailey Tolson, Rich Stinson who qualified through a Last Change Qualifier. Andrew Fitzgerald finished tenth. The top ten completed all one hundred laps.

Dietz was already a fan of longer distance races and of the High Banks of the Bridgeport Motorsports Park. “This track is incredible,” the race winner exclaimed. “This is a one in a life time race.”

Dave Brown picked up the win in the fifty lap F&W Graphix Fall Classic honoring the late Bob Schweibinz. Schweibinz was the grandfather of 2022 MASS Champion, Buddy Schweibinz, It was Bob Schweibinz who introduced his family to racing. When Bob passed away before the start of the season, the driver and crew dedicated this season which included a feature win, the MASS Championship as well as the Tanner Brothers Dairy Store Bridgeport Championship.

Polesitter, Aidan Borden led the first lap but it was all Dave Brown from lap two on as Brown raced ahead of the field and through lapped traffic to capture the fifty lap victory. Brown led the way over Borden, CJ Faison, Tim Iulg and Schweibinz through the first five laps. The running order remained unchanged through the open red with fourteen laps scored. The cars remained on the track with a crew member adding fuel or making wing or shock adjustments. After the three minute break, the field lined up for the double file restart on lap fifteen.

Iulg had a good restart as he moved up to second behind Brown. Borden, Faison and 2022 MASS Rookie of the Year, DJ Tanner completed the top five through the halfway mark. Schweibinz battled with Tanner to climb back into the top five by lap thirty. Josh Bricker was the next driver to break into the top five, dropping Tanner to sixth with twenty laps to go.

Brown caught the back of the field on lap thirty seven but the Aston, PA driver had little trouble making his way through lapped traffic.

With just three laps to go, Dirk Rimrott had his No. 56 go up in smoke and drop moisture around the track. One lap later, Darren Cox ran into trouble going into turn one. Cox relinquished his top ten finish as he was towed back to the pits.

Brown led the field to the checkered followed by Iulg, Schweibinz, Bricker and Tanner. Mark Bitner finished sixth followed by Jeff Paulson, Phil Meisner, Jr. , Dan Leaper and Shelby Kelly.

The fifty lap event created a lot of interest for future races.

Brown credited his dad with the success of this season as well as the Bitner power under the hood of the No. 44.

Iulg finished ahead of Schweibinz in the final race of the season but it wasn’t enough to overcome the ten point deficit. Schweibinz collected the Tanner Brother Dairy Store Bridgeport Championship for 2022.

Frank Cozze raced to the win in the Underdog 30 sponsored by Fire Management Control of PA and Rent Equip of Delaware. It was Cozze’s first win on the High Banks and actually coincided with his big win in Syracuse on this same weekend some years ago.

JR Fulper celebrated his birthday by leading the starting line-up to the green flag. Fulper led the first five laps but it was Cozze who was out in front on lap six. HJ Bunting moved the Blue Hen Racing No. 30 into second on lap eight. Bunting was the fast timer in the timed warm-ups and was able to give Cozze a challenge on the restarts but Cozze was able to pull away when the race returned to green flag racing.

Cozze drove to the checkered for the win followed by Bunting, Richie Pratt, Jr., Rich Rutski and Roger Manning. Cozze was pleased with the wide, smooth track. “I finally get to win something,” Cozze stated, crediting his crew for all of their hardwork throughout the season. Cozze was joined in Victory Lane by his family, including several grandchildren who had the thrill of seeing him win a race.

It was the first Bridgeport start of the season for Rutski and David Hunt. Sammy Martz, Jr. used the event to shake down a new No. 24 Modified.

Joe Garey, Jr. made it a clean sweep in the John Blewett Inc. Scrap & Waste Recyling Four Cylinder feature event. Ken Johnson was the early race leader, falling to the challenge of Eric Deggler. Deggler led until just before halfway when Garey, Jr. took the lead.

Garey, Jr. picked up his second win of the weekend over Rich Page, Tim Jones, Shane Flaherty and Eric Deggler.

SWEDESBORO, NJ – With minimal open dates available on both the Bridgeport Schedule and North East Modified’s Schedule, Bridgeport felt it would be best to stick to a date they already have in place. “We didn’t want to schedule this date and conflict with another scheduled Modified race. We originally considered Saturday November 5th so we had the opportunity for a Sunday rain date, but we have 3 competitors planning on going to Charlotte. To be fair to them we have decided to revamp the November weekend in it’s entirety and run the Danny Serrano 100 and the All American 40 on Sunday November 6th“ stated promoter Doug Rose.

The revamped November High Banks Classic will take place over two days, Saturday November 5 and Sunday November 6. “When moving Danny’s race to November 6th and looking what was originally scheduled the two dates had many similarities. So to make it easy we are simply going to replace the original schedule of events for the 6th with the scheduled events from September 25th“, Rose summarized.

With the new purse structures in place for Sunday’s events Bridgeport organizers felt it would be best to run the weekend as a Saturday and Sunday only event. Rose cited, “I have spoken with the organizers of the USAC All Pro SpeedSTR’s and the USAC EC Sprints on our decision to remove the Friday portion off the weekend. They understood the logistics and costs for Friday’s activities, it makes sense to remove at this time”.

With the new schedule in place, the High Banks Weekend will look like this for November 5 & 6……
