JOSH WELLER, LAST CORNER PASS EXCITES FANS FOR URC SPRINT CAR WIN AT BRIDGEPORT

The Bridgeport Motorsports Park presented a four division show as they welcomed the return of the United Racing Club on  Saturday night.  The show was sponsored by BRB Contractors and featured the Ice Less 602 Sportsman, the Roveda Speed Street Stocks and the Triple R Truck Parks Four Cylinders along with the winged sprints of URC who last appeared at the Kingdom of Speed during the 2022 season.

The Ice Less 602 Sportsman saw Brian Papiez race to his fourth win of the season and put himself on top of the win column in this division.  Polesitter, Jax Yohn led the field from the start as Papiez made his way to the front from his tenth place starting position.  Billy Chester, Michael Beckett, Brian Rogers and Travis Hill made up the top five in the early going.

Yohn caught the back of the field on lap ten.  Papiez raced in fourth behind Chester and Hill.  Just before half way, Papiez challenged Hill for third.  A caution at the half way mark allowed Papiez to take the lead on the restart.

Papiez raced to the finish with Yohn and Hill in second and third, respectively.  Ethan Bill made his way to fourth and Billy Chester rounded out the top five for one of his best performances.  Michale Beckett finished sixth after running among the top five.  He was followed by Ethan Young, Trent Willey, Howie Finch and Matt Peck to complete the top ten.

It was a good night for Papiez who made his performance seem effortless but it actually comes about from a lot of work and preparation.

When the green flag waved on the URC feature event, Tyler Ross grabbed the lead from his fourth position start.   Hayden Miller starrted from the pole and raced in second  with Reese Nowatarski, who was fastest in warm-ups, racing in third.  Ronald Helmick and JT Ferry completed the top five in the early going.

A red flag brought the action to a halt on lap ten when Brandon McGough ran into trouble on the backstretch, making contact with the wall after a rough ride.  The safety crew went to work quickly.   McGough escaped injury.

The restart saw Ross  lead the way as Weller raced into second followed by Miller, Nowatarski and JT Ferry.

Ross, who won the last URC race, looked liked he was on his way to another win but the caution waved with two to go when Miller needed attention in turn two.  The field went back to the green nose-to-tail and Weller was pressuring Ross for the lead.

It was a race for the lead as Ross and Weller battled to the checkered.  Weller held the advantage as the two drivers raced out of turn four for the final time.  They were side-by-side but Weller had the advantage at the finish line.  Nowatarski finished third behind Weller and Ross with Ferry in fourth and Robbie Stillwaggon in fifth.  Ken Meisner finished sixth over Ryan Stillwaggon, Jonathan Swift, Ron Helmick and Randy Wilbert.

After a disappointing run in his heat race, Weller and crew made major changes before the feature.  “We threw everything at it,” for the feature, Weller noted, “and we had a rocket.”

Gary Bozowski led the way for the first three laps of the Triple R Truck Street Stock feature event with Mike Hughes and multi-time champion, Tom Wills, Jr. followed.

Ormsbee moved into third on the second circuit.  Rob Ormsbee was challenging for the lead when the caution waved for Mike Hughes who ran into trouble off of turn two.  Both Hughes and Chris Allen headed to the pits under the caution. Ormsbee took the lead on the restart.

Bozowski pulled off the track with engine gremlins on lap six.  Wills moved into third.

The final laps were riddled with issues.  Wills battled with Ensinger, Jr. for second and even challenged for the lead before he slowed before the checkered.  Nick Sandone III relinquished a top five finish when he ran into problems in turn two.

Ormsbee raced to the win over Ensinger, Jr., Cox, Chris Lane and Kevin Heckman.

Dan Stein, Jr.  raced to his fourth win of the season in the Triple R Truck Part 4 Cylinder feature and his fourth win in a row.

The early laps saw a three car battle for the lead between Joe Garey, Jr., Lee Allen and Stein.  Garey, Jr. led the first five laps but it was all Stein from lap six to the checkered.

Lee Allen finished second followed by Joe Garey, Jr., Joe Garey, Sr. and Roger Kumnerer.

PAPIEZ & DREVICKI VISIT BRIDGEPORT VICTORY LANE

Professional Design Services sponsored Saturday night’s racing action at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park.

Brian Papiez raced to his third win in the Ice Less LLC 602 Sportsman after taking the lead from Rookie Champion, Michael Beckett.  Steven Drevicki raced to his first win of the season in the USAC Rapid Tire East Coast Wingless Sprints.  Spider Ensinger Jr. earned his first Bridgeport victory in the Street Stocks while Da Stein raced to another win in the Four Cylinder feature,

Ashley Therien and Shane Kassekert led the 602 Sportsman feature line-up to the green flag with Kassekert grabbing the lead at the start.  Kassekert raced into the lead as Beckett raced into second.  Kassekert led the way for three laps before Beckett raced into the lead on lap four.

Just one week after the DA’s Auto Body & Repair Rookie Graduation, Rookie Champion, Michael Beckett found himself leading the 602 Sportsman feature.

Beckett led the way through lap twelve as he caught the back of the field.  A mid-race caution put Beckett and Papiez side-by-side for the restart saw Papiez race into the lead.

It was Papiez for the win with Beckett finishing second just one week following Rookie graduation.  HJ Bunting finished third while racing a Blue Hen Speed & Performance No. 97.  Travis Hill raced to fourth in the final laps with Matt Peck rounding out the top five.  Matt Ellery took sixth late in the race followed by Tom Sherby, Billy Chester, Luke Bunting and Trent Willey.

USAC Rapid Tire East Coast Wingless Sprints have been dominated by Briggs Danner and Alex Bright on the High Banks.  On Saturday night, Steven Drevicki raced to his first Bridgeport win and first win of the 2024 season.

JT Ferry lead the field for the first five laps before Drevicki hustled into the lead on lap six.  Ferry raced in second as Drevicki raced away from the field through the first half of the race until Kenny Miller III and Bobby Butler raced into second and third.

Drevicki was way out in front as Miller and Butler set a torrid pace behind the leader.  Ferry and Ed Aiken completed the top five at this juncture.

The field escaped a close call on lap twenty-three when Heidi Henin lost the handle on the No. 3H.  Drevicki skated through but Hedin caught Miller as he tried to slide the hole on the outside.  Miller never stopped and was able to continue in second on the race’s final restart.

Drevicki took the win over Miller III, Butler, Ferry and Bruce Buckwalter, Jr.  Ed Aiken, Christian Bruno, Aidan Borden, David Swanson and Mike Haggenbottom rounded out the top ten.

Spider Ensinger, Jr. took his first trip to Champion Brands Victory  Lane in the Professional Design Services Street Stock feature.  Chris Allen Sr. finished second after a battle with Gary Bozowski for the position.  Bozowski had his best finish to date in third followed by 2023 Champion, Tom Wills, Jr. and Nick Sandone III.

Dan Stein was a repeat winner in the Four Cylinder feature event, taking the win over Lee Allen, John Parker, Joe Garey, Sr. and Jim Backowski.

CAREER FIRSTS FOR ROGER MANNING & CODY WEST IN BRIDGEPORT ACTION

Bitner Automotive sponsored Saturday night’s races at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park with five divisions of racing.

Roger Manning raced to his first Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modified feature win of his career, becoming the fifth different driver to do so this season.  Cody West was the winner of the DCB’s Plumbing & Heat Mid Atlantic Sprint Series feature event, collecting his first ever feature win in a sprint car.  Brian Papiez added another win in the Ice Less 602 Sportsman while Michael Beckett was crowned as the 2024 DA’s Auto Body & Repair Rookie as he raced to his sixth win in this division.  Nick Sandone III became a repeat winner in the Bitner Automotive Street Stock feature while Lee Allen revisited Champion Brands Victory Lane in the Four Cylinder competition.

Roger Manning’s last feature win came in 2017 on the old 5/8th mile track in the Sportsman division.  The following season Manning moved into the Modifieds where he has led races and raced among the top five on many occasions but something always seemed to happen, preventing Manning from collecting the laurels.  On Saturday night, Manning put together a great thirty laps for the win that will have racing fans talking for a long time.  Not only did Manning win his first Modified feature but he did so with Billy Pauch, Jr. and Dillon Steuer hot on his trail.

Manning led the first thirteen laps if the feature over Mike Franz and JR Fulper.  Manning had a healthy lead as the field approached the halfway mark.  A lap fourteen restart saw Pauch, Jr. race into second with Steuer taking over third following a turn three tangle with JR Fulper and Cale Ross.  Both drivers had been racing in the top five prior to the restart.

Pauch pulled out all of the stops as he repeated challenged Manning for the lead.  But each time, Manning responded with a counter move to maintain the lead.  Several times, Pauch slid to the inside of Manning in turn three but each time, Manning raced out of turn four at the front of the field.  It quickly became a three car battle for the win with both Pauch and Steuer challenging.  Steuer took over second on lap twenty-five but Pauch was able to regain the position after another turn or two around the High Banks.  With Steuer pressuring, Pauch had to switch to defense in the final laps as Manning pulled away from the battle for second.

It was Manning for the win, becoming the fourth different first time feature winner in as many races.  Manning joined the drivers Jim Gallagher, Jr., Brian Papiez and Sammy Martz, Jr. all of whom earned their first wins during the month of June.  Paul Mancini was also a first time winner earlier this year.

Pauch finished second followed by Steuer who finished third for the fourth consecutive race.  Billy Osmun III finished fourth with Ryan Krachun’s late race move took him into fifth.  Matt Stangle finished sixth followed by Sam Martz, Sr., Sam Martz, Jr., HJ Bunting and Frank Cozze.

Cody West became the fourth different winner in MASSS competition on the High Banks as he raced by leader, Tim Iulg for the win in Fred Kennedy’s No. 56.  West has run some sprint car races in the last few seasons but just became a MASS regular in 2024.  West closed in on Iulg as the leaders raced through lapped traffic.  Iulg and West raced side by side on lap nineteen with West taking the lead with five laps to go.

West took the win over Dave Grube, Iulg, Mark Bitner and Kevin Nagy whose late race pass moved him into the top five.  Aidan Borden finished sixth over Troy Betts, Buddy Schweibinz, Dave Brown and Ryan Stillwaggon.

Brian Papiez was able to withstand the late race challenges of Ethan Bill to take the win in the Ice Less 602 Sportsman.  Papiez led from the green flag to the checkered for the win on his 33rd birthday.  Bill finished second followed by Wayne Weaver, Ethan Young and Travis Hill who broke into the top five late in the race.  Matt Peck finished sixth over Jax Yohn, Brian Rogers, Michael Beckett and Luke Bunting.

Michael Beckett raced to his six victory and the DA’s Auto Body & Repair Rookie championship on Rookie Graduation Night at Bridgeport.  Ashley Therien finished second with James Allen taking third late in the race.

Nick Sandone III was the popular winner in the Bitner Automotive Street Stock feature event, racing ahead of Mike Hughes for most of the race.  Hughes was sidelined with mechanical issues late in the race.  Jeff Dirkes raced into second in the final laps over Terry Chaney and Kevin Heckman.  Several race teams jumped in to help Sandone when he was sidelined from hot laps with a mechanical issue.

Lee Allen kept Scott Degler within reach during the Bitner Automotive Four Cylinder feature and when Degler and a slower car made contact, Allen was in the position to take the lead.  Degler headed to the pits while Allen raced to the win over former champion, Ed Ford, Joe Garey, Sr., John Parker and Roger Kummerer.
