WATKINS, BILL & PAPIEZ LEAD QUALIFYING FOR SPORTSMAN NATIONALS

There was excitement in the air.

Something special was happening at the Kingdom of Speed.

The first day of the Harry U Pull It Sportsman Grand Nationals saw nearly sixty Ice Less 602 Sportsman line the pit area of the Bridgeport Motorsports Park in addition to the Mid Atlantic Sprint Series Sprint Cars (MASS) and Giel Four Cylinder competitors.

Following a Thursday evening practice session, Friday night featured the qualifying for the 602 Sportsman.  Timed hot lap sessions were used to determine the starting line-ups for three twenty lap qualifiers that would transfer seven drivers each into Saturday’s $10,000 to win 100 lap event.

The field was divided into three groups with each group then split into three smaller sections.  Each section was timed during the hot lap session and each group had a quick timer.

The first group saw Howie Finch top the charts at 17.047 seconds; group two saw third generation driver, Luke Bunting turn a lap at 16.99 seconds.  Logan Watt was quickest in the third group at 16.971.  It was Bunting who had the fastest time of the night.

Twenty-one cars were then qualified through the three, twenty lap qualifying races.  The top three in each qualifier would then compete in a five lap Cash Dash on Saturday to determine the first nine starting positions.  Precision Hydraulic & Oil was the Cash Dash sponsor.

Brandon Watkins led every lap on his way to the $500 win in the first qualifier presented by Renaldo’s Mechanical, followed by Tommy Moore, Howie Finch, Brad Roberts, Trent Willy, TJ Mayberry and Adam White. Watkins, Moore and Finch transferred into Saturday’s Cash Dash.

Matt Ellery led the first fifteen laps of the second qualifier presented by Izzi Trucking & Rigging until 2024 Bridgeport Champion, Ethan Bill too the lead on lap sixteen.  Bill drove to the win in the second qualifier followed by Ellery, Luke Bunting, Ryan Simmons, James Hill, Jared LaBagh and Matt Peck.  Bill, Ellery and Bunting moved into Saturday’s Cash Dash.

The third qualifier presented by Ellery’s Pub & Grill saw a lot of action throughout the twenty lap race.  After several attempts to score the first lap, Steve Davis took the lead for the first four laps.  Brian Papiez raced out in front on lap five and led the way to the win over Davis, Michael White, Travis Hill, Michael Beckett, Steve Kemery and Logan Watt.  Papiez, Davis and White would move on to the Cash Dash on Saturday.

Positions of eighth back in each of the three qualifiers would be eligible for Saturday’s Last Chance Qualifier.

The DCB Plumbing and Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series ran four qualifiers and a B Main to determine the line-up in Friday night’s twenty-five lap feature event that saw Kevin Nagy race to his second win of the 2024 season.

Jared Kreider and Nagy made up the front row of the sprint car feature and led the field to the green flag.  Nagy grabbed the lead on the start.  The Stillwaggon brothers, Robbie and Ryan, raced for third behind Kreider.

Nagy caught the back of the field on lap eight which made for some interesting racing as he and Kreider raced through traffic.  Kreider actually took the lead on lap eleven as he raced past Nagy as they both picked their way through the traffic.  Nagy was back out in front on the next time around the High Banks.

2024 MASS Champion, Buddy Schweibinz broke into the top five with ten laps to go.  Schweibinz raced into third two laps later as he passed by Ryan and Robbie Stillwaggon for position.

With just four laps to go, Ryan Stillwaggon got out of shape in turn four, collecting Tim Iulg.  The caution waved for the first time in the race, setting up a single file restart.

Nagy and Kreider raced ahead of the field as Schweibinz dealt with the challenges of Robbie Stillwaggon and Dave Brown.

Nagy became the first repeat winner of the season in MASS competition at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park after eight different drivers collected victories during the season.  Kreider raced to the finish in second followed by Schweibinz, Robbie Stillwaggon and Brown.  Timmy Bittner crossed the stripe in sixth followed by Eddie Wagner, Brian Carber, DJ Tanner and Larry McVey.

With just one more race remaining, Schweibinz led Nagy by four points in the Tanner Brothers Dairy Bridgeport Championship.

The Giels Automotive Four Cylinders put on an exciting fifteen lap feature event, full fender style.

Joe Garey, Jr. and multiple feature winner, Scott Degler, led the field to the start with Garey taking the lead at the wave of the green flag.

While Garey led the way, Degler was right on his bumper, shadowing the leader lap after lap.  On lap twelve, the leaders found themselves racing through lapped traffic.  Garey and a lapped car made contact and Degler was able to race by.  Degler took the lead as Garey headed to the pits with a flat tire.

Degler led the way on the restart with just two laps to go over Colin Gale and 2024 Champion, Lee Allen.  Allen went to the outside and passed both Gale and Degler to take the lead.

Allen took the win over Joe Garey, Sr., Gale, Degler who finished with a flat tire and John Parker.

BILL, SANDONE III, ALLEN ALL CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT BRIDGEPORT MOTORSPORTS PARK!

It was the final night of the 2024 Championship season at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park for the Ice Less 602 Sportsman, the Williams NAPA Auto Parts Street Stocks and the Johns Manville Four Cylinders.  The winged sprints of the United Racing Club were also closing out there 2024 season on the High Banks.  The Vintage Stocks Cars completed the Saturday night race program presented by TW Metals.

The Ice Less 602 Sportsman championship would be decided in the final race of the season with Brian Papiez leading Ethan Bill by a scant four points coming into Saturday night’s races.  This was the second season in a row that Bill found himself just a few points out of first with one final race to be run.

Qualifying went off without a hitch with the field set for the start of the twenty-five lap 602 Sportsman feature.  Bill lined up in tenth with Papiez right behind him in twelfth.  Polesitter, Brian Rogers led lap one.  One lap later, Rogers pulled to the outside as he slowed coming down the homestretch after losing the rear in the No. 191, bringing out the first caution.

Rob Tete was the race’s new leader.  As he led the field to complete lap three, the caution waved as Brian Papiez was left in turn four, facing traffic.  And then, Ethan Bill and Trent Willey collided in turn one.  Papiez and Bill both headed pitside and both returned to restart at the back of the field.  Ethan Young led the way on the green over Matt Peck but the caution waved again as Papiez stopped on the backstretch with mechanical issues.  This time, Papiez would not restart.  Bill continued, knowing the championship was his if he finished the race.

After several false starts on lap seven, Peck took the lead over Young, Michael Beckett, Jim Wyers and Bill who had already advanced to the top five.

The remaining laps ran without incident as Peck raced to his fourth win of the season.  Ethan Young finished second for his best finish to date with the new champion, Ethan Bill in third.  Beckett finished fourth followed by Wyers in fifth.  Billy Chester crossed the stripe in sixth ahead of Travis Hill, Dave Damiano, Trent Willey and Rob Tete.

Peck celebrated with his Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz No. 51 crew while Bill’s family and friends celebrated the 2024 Ice Less 602 Sportsman Championship.

The TW Metals Street Stock feature saw Gary Klimeczak take the early race lead over Spider Ensinger, Junior and Senior.  A turn two incident eliminated the cars of Mike Hughes, Gary Bozowski and point leader, Nick Sandone.

Klimeczak led the first six laps, battling for several laps with Jason Geesaman before Geesaman was able to take the lead on lap seven.  Defending track champion, Tom Wills, Jr. raced into third and closed the gap on Klimeczak.  Klimeczak and Wills battled to the checkered flag, racing side by side to the stripe.

Geesaman took the checkered flag but was disqualified after failing post-race tech.   That gave the win to Klimeczak who beat Wills to the finish line by inches.  Spider Ensinger, Jr. finished third followed by his dad, Spider Ensinger, Sr. in fourth.  Kyle Saylor rounded out the top five at the checkered.

Nick Sandone III celebrated his first Street Stock Championship.  Sandone came into the final race with the title secure so that his elimination early in the race did not affect the outcome of the championship title.

Eric Degler raced to the win in the Johns Manville Four Cylinder feature.  Degler debuted this car No. 19 just a week earlier, taking what had been an asphalt car and converting it for dirt competition.  While he admits, that there is still work to be done, Degler led every lap for the win over Dan Stein, Jr., Lee Allen, Roger Kumnerner and John Parker.  Lee Allen was crowned as the 2024 Champion in this division.

The United Racing Club competed in their final race of the 2024 season.

Jordan Thomas was filling in for Tyler Ross in the Bob Lilick No. 7.  Ryan Taylor and Kyle Spence were also on hand for the season finale.  Davey Franek was in the field after picking up a win in New York state the night before with the Empire State Sprints.

Taylor and Thomas led the field to the green flag with Taylor taking the lead on the start.  Franek quickly moved into second as Thomas slowed on the first lap, drawing the caution with just one lap scored.  Taylor held the lead over Franek and Robbie Stillwaggon.

Randy Wilbert drew a caution with ten laps completed with both right side tires down on the No. 56W.  The field realigned for the restart.  Taylor led the way, immediately drawing ahead of Franek by several car lengths.  Kyle Spence had a great restart to move into third.

Taylor led the way as the field encountered lapped traffic with about seven laps to go.  After racing among the top five for most of the race, Adam Carberry pulled off on lap nineteen.

Taylor raced to the win over Franek, Spence, Stillwaggon and Ken Meisner.  Josh Weller finished sixth en route to his third URC title.

Professional Design Services sponsored the Vintage competitors with Tyler Miller  the winner in the Classic Vintage.

PAUCH JR & SPENCER WIN BRIDGEPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was the final night of points for the Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modifieds and the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints in a five division show at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park.  The Ice Less LLC Sportsman, Street Stocks and Four Cylinder titles will be decided at the end of next Saturday’s competition.

Dillon Steuer raced to his second feature win of the season, racing from deep in the pack and into the lead just as Neal Williams slowed with mechanical issues.  Brian Papiez raced to his fifth feature win of the season in the Ice Less LLC 602 Sportsman and took a four point lead in the championship chase with one race left on the points schedule.  In what proved to be a very competitive race for the lead, Mike Hughes earned to his sixth win in the Street Stocks while Tim Jones raced to the win in the Four Cylinder competition.  Matt Peck raced to his first ever win in the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints over defending champion, Brian Spencer.

Billy Pauch, Jr. captured his first ever Bridgeport track title – marked by his first season of running his own race team on a full-time basis.  Bridgeport is the third track where Pauch, Jr. has followed in the footsteps of his father.  “It’s the first time that I’ve run my own team on a full time,” Pauch, Jr. stated.  “I’ve always run my own team for some races.” Pauch continued,  “That’s pretty good – I was second here before and now I came back and won the championship.”

Spencer’s championship marked two in a row for the Victory Fuel wingless sprint competitor.

Spencer made the mathematics easy as he first put together a string of runner-up finishes and then a string of wins on his way to his second championship in this division.

Mike Franz led the first four laps of the Modified feature event with Neal Williams blasting into the lead on lap five.  Williams set a torrid pace while Steuer made his way through the top ten.  Steuer raced in second with ten laps scored.

Steuer closed in on the leader, challenging for the lead on lap thirteen.  Steuer raced to the inside of Williams to take the lead but the caution waved quickly as Williams slowed on the track.  Williams was pushed to the pits as Steuer prepared to lead the field back to the green flag.

Steuer led Sam Martz, Stan Frankenfield, Billy Pauch, Jr. and Roger Manning through the crossed flags.  Pauch raced by Frankenfield to take over third a few laps later.

It was Steuer all the way to the checkered followed by Martz, Pauch, Frankenfield and Manning at the checkered.  Frank Cozze, Rick Laubach, Cole Stangle, Ryan Krachun and Cale Ross completed the top ten at the end of thirty laps.

Steuer talked about the excellent track conditions that allowed him to race from his twelfth place start into the lead.  “The track was real racey,” Steuer explained.  “Anyone who thinks there’s a lack of passing better watch the replays.”  Steuer has racked up some impressive results since putting the SY Murray powerplant under the hood of the No. 6D.

The Ice Less 602 Sportsman raced for an enhanced purse on Saturday night as Bridgeport competitor and business owner, Rob Tete paid tribute to his friend, Darrin Nicholl.  Nicholl spent many race days with Tete’s No. 30 in recent seasons.  A disabled veteran, Tete talked about his friend’s positive attitude.  Nicholl passed away in mid-July of this year.  Tete’s efforts to win a feature event in Nicholl’s honor fell just one spot short earlier this summer.

Brian Papiez raced to his fifth win in the 602 Sportsman and moved into the point lead by just four points over Ethan Bill, with just one race remaining before the champion is crowned.

Jax Yohn took the lead on the twenty-five lap main event at the start and led for ten laps.  Trent Willey took over on lap eleven and twelve but Yohn was back in front following a lap thirteen restart.  On lap fourteen, Papiez raced into second.  Yohn took the outside on a lap sixteen restart but Papiez raced into the lead when the green flag waved.

The top five really put on a show as second through fifth remained undecided until the checkered flag.  Yohn finished second with Ethan Bill in third, Willey in fourth and Joe Toth in fifth.  Travis Hill finished sixth followed by Jim Wyers, Matt Peck, Devin Dodson and Tom Sherby.

New to sprint cars this season, Matt Peck’s entrance into the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints has been anything but easy.  But with a win in Saturday night’s sprint car feature, Peck turned the corner on the 2024 season.

Peck raced to the checkered in front of 2024 Champion, Brian Spencer.  Chris Allen, Jr finished third followed by Dan Leaper and Jonathan Swanson.

Mike Hughes picked up his fifth win of the season in the Street Stock feature in what proved to be a very competitive event.  Bailey Tolson was the early leader holding off the challenges of Duncan Molesworth before Hughes arrived on the scene.  It was a three car battle for the lead until Hughes put the No. 18 out in front on lap five.

It was Hughes for the win over Molesworth, Tolson, Gary Bozowski and Jeff Dirkes.

Defending Four Cylinder Champion, Tim Jones was the Cinderella story of the night.  Jones recently sold his Four Cylinder No. 33 but was then asked to “shake down” a car for fellow competitor, Scott Degler.  It was a successful “shake down” as Jones drove the car into Champion Brands Victory Lane at the end of fifteen laps.  Lee Allen was a strong second with a late race challenge.  Dan Stein, Jr. finished third over John Healey and Roger Kumnerner.
