WHITTALL & MARTZ, JR. COLLECT DIRTY JERSEY WINS AT BRIDGEPORT

Vincentown, NJ driver, Justin Whittall raced to the $11,000 winner’s share of the Dirty Jersey at Bridgeport Motorsports Park.  The race was co-promoted by Bridgeport’s Doug Rose and PA Posse driver, Danny Dietrich with Brewers Home Improvements sponsoring the two-day event that  featured 410 Sprint Cars – the only race of its kind in the Garden State this season.

Whittall picked up $500 for his win in the Dash which gave him the pole position start in the thirty lap main event.  Whittall led every lap on his way to the biggest win of his career.  Another Garden State race, Kyle Reinhardt was the only driver to challenge Whittall on his way to victory.  Reinhardt briefly grabbed the lead but Whittall quickly raced back into the lead.

The New Jersey drivers kept the first two positions for themselves, thrilling the large crowd in attendance on the beautiful first weekend of November.

Whittall took the win over Reinhardt.  Danny Dietrich raced into third late in the race to capture the final podium finish.  Oklahoma’s Daison Pursley finished fourth in his first race in the Tom Buch No. 13.  Anthony Macri raced from his 24th place start to a top five finish after overcoming mechanical issues during qualifying.  Michael Walter finished sixth followed by Freddie Rahmer, Jordan Poirier, Aaron Bollinger and Tyler Ross.

Pursley was Saturday’s Fast Timer.  Pursley was the first car on the track, setting 12.786 as the time to beat for the rest of the field.  Briggs Danner was the high point man following the four heat races.  Whittall claimed the win in the dash.  All three drivers received $500 payouts sponsored by Betts Garage.

Heats were won by Davey Franek,  Jordan Poirier, Ryan Smith and Bryce Lucius with Aaron Bollinger taking the B Main.

Brewers Home Improvements was the sponsor of the two day event.  Weikert Livestock and Staunton Union Stockyard added several bonuses to the top five positions.  Heat winners received right rear tires from Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic.  $50 gift certificate for steering rebuilds from ERK Steering went to each of the second place finishers in the sprint car heats as well as Free Factory Kahne Shock certificates presented by Drew Bible and 8740 Suspension.  The first sprint non-qualifier received a right rear tire from Racer’s Used Parts Warehouse.  The $300 Hard Charger was sponsored by Mitch Bodine Magoo’s Motorsickles.  JPA Masonry offered  $200 for the Hard Luck Award.  Big Glen Enterprises offered $250 for the driver turning the fastest lap during the thirty lap feature.  $300 was added to feature winner if carrying the Brewers Home Improvement decal.  Mamma’s Pizza of Wellsville offered $100 awards to the Hard Charger and Hard Luck driver.

“I wish we had had a race yesterday, too,” Whittall said following his big win.  It was Whittall’s first win on the High Banks.

Sammy Martz, Jr. raced to his second win of the season in the Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modified 30 lap feature event.

The final race of the season paid $4,000 to the winner leading Martz to comment that he seems to be able to win the special shows but not regular Saturday night races.  Martz’s first Modified win came in the Doug Olsen Memorial race in mid-June.

Martz led every lap from the green to the checkered to capture his latest victory but he had plenty of company during the middle portion of the race when both Neal Williams and Dillon Steuer had Martz on their radar.

Williams and Steuer battled back and forth for second but it was Williams who told Martz that he had him lined up.

Martz chose to run a middle line – thinking he would avoid any challenges from slide jobs that way.  Williams had a plan but lapped traffic foiled his attempt.

It was Martz for the win over Steuer, Williams, Cale Ross and Sam Martz Sr.  Frank Cozze finished sixth followed by Roger Manning, Jeff Strunk in the Rio R10, Mike Franz and WB James.

Phil Levering raced to his first win of the season in the Four Cylinder main event.  Levering raced in Roger Kummerer’s No.74 to take the win over Joe Garey, Jr., Justin Benz, Joe Garey. Sr and Jim Backowski.

DANNER OPENS DIRTY JERSEY WITH A WIN ON BRIDGEPORT’S HIGH BANKS

And so it goes!

After winning his first ever race in a sprint car at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park, it seemed like the natural thing to do.  Briggs Danner raced to the win in the Boulevard Trucking No. 39 in the non-winners race on night one of the Brewer Home Improvements Dirty Jersey weekend.

In just his fourth full season of sprint car competition, Danner raced to three wins in the USAC National Sprint Cars this season.  He also had multiple victories in the USAC East Coast Wingless Sprints.  With limited experience in winged racing, Danner was part of the nearly thirty cars on hand for the Friday night action of the Dirty Jersey – an event co-promoted by Bridgeport’s Doug Rose and PA Posse competitor, Danny Dietrich.

This is the only event for 410 winged sprint cars in the state of New Jersey in 2024.

Kyle Spence started from the pole after a four-car invert to determine the starting line-up in the twenty-lap event.  Spence quickly pulled away from the field as Danner slid into second on the start with fast timer Jordan Thomas taking over third.

On two occasions, Danner had closed the gap on Spence right before the caution flag waved for single car incidents.  On each restart, Spence held the lead as the field went back to green flag racing.

The second and final caution came with just five laps to go.  Spence led the way on lap sixteen but Danner was in position to challenge.  The two drivers changed lanes and Danner went to the inside to take the lead as the field exited turn two.  Danner went on to lead the final to laps to capture the win over Spence, Thomas, Michael Walter and Billy VanInwegen.

“It feels good to be back,” Danner exclaimed following his win.  Danner’s last race on the High Bank came during the Eastern Storm swing in June.  “The best part is we are locked into tomorrow.  That takes a lot of pressure off.”

Kyle Reinhardt was the fast timer of the night, looking for another good showing in front of the New Jersey fans.

Dyson Pursley turned his first laps in the Buch Motorsports No. 13.  Pursley replaces Justin Peck in the Pella Windows No. 13 and looks to make his first start in the winged 410 sprint car this week.  Like Danner, Pursley’s last race on the High Banks came during the 2024 Eastern Storm event.

2024 Victory Fuel Wingless Sprint Champion, Brian Spencer closed out his 2024 season with his eighth win of the year.  Spencer led from the green to the checkered to take the win over Shea Wills who battled with Dan Leaper for several laps.  Leaper finished third followed by Jonathan Swanson and Thomas Radivoy.

Eric Degler was the Brewer Home Improvement four cylinder winner in a wire-to-wire win.  Joe Garey Sr. finished second over Jim Backowski, Roger Kummerer and Ron Weil.

ROBBIE STILLWAGGON WINS INAUGURAL 305 SPRINT NATIONALS, FAISON MEMORIAL AT BRIDGEPORT

Robbie Stillwaggon raced to victory in the fifty lap Ron Faison Memorial 305 Sprint Car Nationals sponsored by Betts Garage Towing and Hauling at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park behind the wheel of the Fred Kennedy owned No. 56.

Ron Faison played an integral role in the rebirth of the Bridgeport Speedway when Doug and Brittany Rose, his son-in-law and daughter, took on the management and redesign of the facility for the 2020 season.

The DCB’s Plumbing and Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series produced eight different winners on the High Banks during the 2024 season.  Stillwaggon became the ninth different winner with his $4,000 victory on Saturday night.  It was the second win of the season for car owner, Fred Kennedy, whose No. 56 was driven to victory by rookie driver, Cody West, earlier this season.  West was injured in a micro sprint race and made the decision to wait to make his return at the start of next season.  West was on hand to crew for Stillwaggon as they worked together to make changes to the car throughout the day on Saturday.

Dale Eggert and Dave Brown led the field to the start of the fifty-lap main event with Eggert taking the lead on the start.  Stillwaggon ran second to Eggert until a lap thirteen restart when Stillwaggon completed the pass for the lead.

Troy Betts took over second and chased Stillwaggon throughout the race.  Betts, like Stillwaggon, has spent most of his time in racing in 360 winged sprint cars.  Betts was able to close the gap on the leader especially while racing through traffic but he was never able to make the challenge for the lead.

At halfway, three time MASS Champion, Buddy Schweibinz raced in third followed by Jadan Bowling and Larry McVay.

Following the stop for fuel, Stillwaggon went back to work.  Bowling advanced as high as third before being sidelined with mechanical issues with just one lap remaining.

The single file restart with one to go saw Stillwaggon race to the win over Betts.  The cars were three wide to the checkered for third with Kevin Nagy winning that battle over Schweibinz and Johnny Smith.  Dave Brown, Timmy Bittner, Aidan Borden, Ian Cumens and Eddie Wagner completed the top ten at the finish.

The Roveda Street Stocks also competed in a fifty lap main event with the win going to Chris Murray.

Mike Hughes, Bailey Tolson and Jason Geesaman battled for second throughout most of the race with Hughes winning the battle.  After leading the race for the first seventeen laps, Geesaman finished third over Tolson and Jimmy Combs who raced into the top five late in the race.  Darren Cox, Andrew Fitzgerald, Ryan Bloom, Kevin Heckman and Terry Chaney completed the top ten at the finish.

Murray, who races midgets throughout the season, built this car especially for this event at Bridgeport.  His efforts paid off with the $2,000 win.

Matt Ellery raced to the win in the Ice Less Topless 602 Sportsman after leading every lap from the green to the checkered.  The racers removed the roofs of their cars for this event that has become a popular race in the post season.

Matt Peck chase Ellery for the twenty-five lap distance to finish second over Jimmy Wyers, Trent Willy and Ryan Simmons.

After many close finishes, Shea Wills raced to his first Bridgeport win in the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprint Car feature.  Wills led every lap on the twenty lap race that ran straight through without a single caution.

Chris Allen, Jr. and Brian Spencer finished second and third behind Wills with Brendan Hires finishing fourth and Matt Peck rounding out the top five.

IULG RACES TO WIN IN PRELUDE TO 305 NATIONALS AT BRIDGEPORT

The Bridgeport Motorsports Park hosted the Ron Faison Memorial 305 Sprint Car Nationals – another successful two day weekend event on the High Banks that saw great October weather!  Betts Garage Trucking & Hauling were the title sponsor for the weekend with All Star Auto Glass sponsoring Friday night’s events.

Friday night’s schedule included a full show of DCB’s Plumbing & Heating Mid Atlantic 305 Sprints (MASS) culminating in a twenty-five lap feature event – the prelude to the fifty lap event on Saturday .  The Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints ran qualfiying and a twenty lap feature.  There was an Underdog 20 race for the Ice Less Sportsman for any driver who had not won a feature event during the 2024 season.  There was a full program of Street Stocks sponsored by Matt Monaghan and Roveda Speed, a prelude to the fifty lapper for the Street Stocks on Saturday.

Just one week earlier, Tim Iulg became the eighth different winner in MASS competition on Bridgeport’s High Banks this season. On Friday night, Iulg added his second win of the season in the Ale No. 19a.

Timed hot laps and qualifying races were used to determine the starting line-up that saw Dale Eggert and Iulg lead the field to the start.  Making his first start of the season, Eggert jumped out to the early lead and led the way for eighteen laps.  On lap nineteen, Iulg went to the outside to take the lead as the field exited turn two.  Iulg led the remaining laps to the checkered with Ryan Stillwaggon taking second in the final laps.  Eggert finished third followed by 2024 MASS Champion, Buddy Schweibinz and Timmy Bittner.  Larry McVay finished sixth with Troy Betts, Eddie Wagner, Mike Smith and Dave Brown completing the top ten.

Iulg dedicated the win to his dad, Gary who was involved in a roadway accident on Thursday.

The Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints saw 2024 Champion Brian Spencer rack up win number eight on the season.

Shea Wills led the first ten laps of the race after he and Spencer shared the front row on the start.  Wills was able to hold off Spencer’s challenges during most of the first half of the race.  When Wills slid high on lap ten, Spencer was able to raced side-by-side with the leader, taking over the top spot on lap eleven.

Spencer led the rest of the way to the checkered for the win.  Wills finished second ahead of Chris Allen, Jr., Dan Lane in the Leaper No. 24L and Stan Ploski III.

The Ice Less 602 Sportsman competed in the Underdog 20 with Trent Willy picking up the win in the twenty lap feature event.

Rob Tete led the first ten laps of the feature event before a mechanical issue forced the ProTek Roofing No. 30 off the pace.  Willy moved into the lead and raced to the win over Jimmy Wyers, Rookie Champion, Michael Beckett, Brad Roberts and John Cameron.

A full field of Street Stocks raced for the win that saw Jason Geesaman take the lead on lap one and then lead every lap on the way to the checkered.

Mike Hughes and Chris Murray kept Geesaman on his toes as they pressured the leader throughout the twenty lap race.  Despite the pressure, Geesaman took the win over Hughes, Murray, Spider Ensinger, Jr. and Duncan Molesworth.  Bailey Tolson, Darren Cox, Mike Baldwin, Chris Allen, Jr. and John Bassino  completed the top ten at the finish.

The stage was set for Saturday’s events with the same four divisions.

WATKINS, BILL & PAPIEZ LEAD QUALIFYING FOR SPORTSMAN NATIONALS

There was excitement in the air.

Something special was happening at the Kingdom of Speed.

The first day of the Harry U Pull It Sportsman Grand Nationals saw nearly sixty Ice Less 602 Sportsman line the pit area of the Bridgeport Motorsports Park in addition to the Mid Atlantic Sprint Series Sprint Cars (MASS) and Giel Four Cylinder competitors.

Following a Thursday evening practice session, Friday night featured the qualifying for the 602 Sportsman.  Timed hot lap sessions were used to determine the starting line-ups for three twenty lap qualifiers that would transfer seven drivers each into Saturday’s $10,000 to win 100 lap event.

The field was divided into three groups with each group then split into three smaller sections.  Each section was timed during the hot lap session and each group had a quick timer.

The first group saw Howie Finch top the charts at 17.047 seconds; group two saw third generation driver, Luke Bunting turn a lap at 16.99 seconds.  Logan Watt was quickest in the third group at 16.971.  It was Bunting who had the fastest time of the night.

Twenty-one cars were then qualified through the three, twenty lap qualifying races.  The top three in each qualifier would then compete in a five lap Cash Dash on Saturday to determine the first nine starting positions.  Precision Hydraulic & Oil was the Cash Dash sponsor.

Brandon Watkins led every lap on his way to the $500 win in the first qualifier presented by Renaldo’s Mechanical, followed by Tommy Moore, Howie Finch, Brad Roberts, Trent Willy, TJ Mayberry and Adam White. Watkins, Moore and Finch transferred into Saturday’s Cash Dash.

Matt Ellery led the first fifteen laps of the second qualifier presented by Izzi Trucking & Rigging until 2024 Bridgeport Champion, Ethan Bill too the lead on lap sixteen.  Bill drove to the win in the second qualifier followed by Ellery, Luke Bunting, Ryan Simmons, James Hill, Jared LaBagh and Matt Peck.  Bill, Ellery and Bunting moved into Saturday’s Cash Dash.

The third qualifier presented by Ellery’s Pub & Grill saw a lot of action throughout the twenty lap race.  After several attempts to score the first lap, Steve Davis took the lead for the first four laps.  Brian Papiez raced out in front on lap five and led the way to the win over Davis, Michael White, Travis Hill, Michael Beckett, Steve Kemery and Logan Watt.  Papiez, Davis and White would move on to the Cash Dash on Saturday.

Positions of eighth back in each of the three qualifiers would be eligible for Saturday’s Last Chance Qualifier.

The DCB Plumbing and Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series ran four qualifiers and a B Main to determine the line-up in Friday night’s twenty-five lap feature event that saw Kevin Nagy race to his second win of the 2024 season.

Jared Kreider and Nagy made up the front row of the sprint car feature and led the field to the green flag.  Nagy grabbed the lead on the start.  The Stillwaggon brothers, Robbie and Ryan, raced for third behind Kreider.

Nagy caught the back of the field on lap eight which made for some interesting racing as he and Kreider raced through traffic.  Kreider actually took the lead on lap eleven as he raced past Nagy as they both picked their way through the traffic.  Nagy was back out in front on the next time around the High Banks.

2024 MASS Champion, Buddy Schweibinz broke into the top five with ten laps to go.  Schweibinz raced into third two laps later as he passed by Ryan and Robbie Stillwaggon for position.

With just four laps to go, Ryan Stillwaggon got out of shape in turn four, collecting Tim Iulg.  The caution waved for the first time in the race, setting up a single file restart.

Nagy and Kreider raced ahead of the field as Schweibinz dealt with the challenges of Robbie Stillwaggon and Dave Brown.

Nagy became the first repeat winner of the season in MASS competition at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park after eight different drivers collected victories during the season.  Kreider raced to the finish in second followed by Schweibinz, Robbie Stillwaggon and Brown.  Timmy Bittner crossed the stripe in sixth followed by Eddie Wagner, Brian Carber, DJ Tanner and Larry McVey.

With just one more race remaining, Schweibinz led Nagy by four points in the Tanner Brothers Dairy Bridgeport Championship.

The Giels Automotive Four Cylinders put on an exciting fifteen lap feature event, full fender style.

Joe Garey, Jr. and multiple feature winner, Scott Degler, led the field to the start with Garey taking the lead at the wave of the green flag.

While Garey led the way, Degler was right on his bumper, shadowing the leader lap after lap.  On lap twelve, the leaders found themselves racing through lapped traffic.  Garey and a lapped car made contact and Degler was able to race by.  Degler took the lead as Garey headed to the pits with a flat tire.

Degler led the way on the restart with just two laps to go over Colin Gale and 2024 Champion, Lee Allen.  Allen went to the outside and passed both Gale and Degler to take the lead.

Allen took the win over Joe Garey, Sr., Gale, Degler who finished with a flat tire and John Parker.
