PAUCH WINS GALLAGHER MEMORIAL IN RACE TO THE FINISH
Everyone is familiar with the various one liners like “it ain’t over til it’s over” or “it’s not over ’til the fat lady sings”. Those words right are right on point when it comes to the Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modifieds. For the second week in a row, the Modified feature was decided on the final lap as the cars raced to the finish line out of turn four.
A week ago, it was Cole Stangle’s flat-foot performance that took the win from Matt Stangle as they raced to the checkered.
On Saturday night, Rick Laubach saw his second win of the season slip away as the No. 7 slowed on the last half lap of the feature.
Saturday night’s events were sponsored by Elite Welder Training & Testing to honor the memory of Jim Gallagher, Sr. The C3 Group was also a sponsor on this race night. In addition to an increased purse and incentives, the Modified race was scheduled as a thirty-one lap event, paying $3,131, commemorating the car number associated with the Gallagher family throughout their years in racing. Gallagher, Sr. passed away last year after a valiant battle against cancer. Jim, Jr. chose to honor his father with this race, run on what would have been his father’s 80th birthday.
Laubach grabbed the lead on the start and led for thirty laps, taking the white flag. Power was noticeably lost as he headed down the backstretch and into turn three on the 31st lap. Billy Pauch, Jr. who ran in second and Dillon Steuer, who took the white flag in third, closed in on the slowing car. As the leaders exited turn four, it was a three car race for the win. Pauch and Steuer raced around Laubach and headed to the checkered flag, while racing for the same real estate. Pauch got to the line first followed by Steuer. Laubach limped to the finish line to take third. Matt Stangle finished fourth with Sammy Martz, Jr. completing the top five at the finish.
Frank Cozze finished in sixth followed by last week’s feature winner, Cole Stangle. Sam Martz, Sr. finished eighth with Wade Hendrickson and HJ Bunting rounding out the top ten.
The win made Pauch just the second driver to repeat in the Modifieds this season. Only Roger Manning has been able to do so up until this week.
Gallagher also presented a special match race sequence that included the drivers that finished in the top five in their heats. The winning driver selected their opponent and started from the inside for the two lap distance. Cole Stangle won the first round and was then defeated by Cale Ross. Rick Laubach won against Ross and then selected Frank Cozze for his next competitor. Billy Pauch, Jr. won the next round and was then defeated by Matt Stangle. Neal Williams took the win over Stangle and then became the first driver to win from the outside and win more than one round. Williams then won over both Dillon Steuer and Wade Hendrickson to claim the victory.
After a violent accident in turns three and four a week earlier, Matt Peck returned to the track with the same car – repaired – and raced to his third win of the season in the Ice Less 602 Sportsman.
Rob Tete led the first four laps before Peck challenged and won the lead on lap five. Five-time feature winner, Brian Papiez moved into second on lap nine. The race ran green from this point on with Peck taking the win followed by Papiez, Trent Willey, Ethan Bill and Joe Toth. Travis Hill finished sixth followed by Craig Pelligrini, Ronnie Solomon, Jim Wyers and Ethan Young.
Defending track champion in the C3 Group Street Stocks, Tom Wills, Jr. has been racing on a part time schedule this season. On Saturday night, he ran just his fourth race of the season and took the win over Mike Hughes after a three car battle for the lead that included Jeff Dirkes.
Hughes, still racing with a crate engine under the hood of the No. 18, finished second followed by Spider Ensinger, Jr., Jeff Dirkes and Terry Chaney.
In other full fendered competition, Joe Garey, Jr. picked up the win in the Four Cylinder feature event over Dan Stein, Jr., Joe Garery, Sr., John Parker and Lee Allen.
The Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints were on hand for another event that saw Brian Spencer race to his fourth win in a row in impressive fashion. Dan Leaper led the first ten laps in the Foley Cat No. 24 before Chris Allen, Jr. took the lead on lap eleven. Allen led for five laps while Spencer raced with Leaper for second. Spencer took the lead from Allen on lap sixteen and then raced to the win by a sizeable margin.
Allen finished second followed by Thomas Radivoy, Shea Wills and David Swanson.

Janney Electric sponsored the four division show at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park on Saturday night and the racing was electrifying as every division offered great racing on the High Banks.
The Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modifieds ended up being the battle of the cousins as seventeen year old, Cole Stangle raced cousin, Matt to the finish line to win his first ever in Modified competition and to become the fourteenth different winner in this division this season.
Jim Gallagher, Jr. and Sammy Martz, Jr. led the field to the green with Gallagher jumping out in front on the start. Matt Stangle had moved up to third before the caution waved for a chain reaction incident in turn four that forced both Roger Manning and Billy Pauch, Jr. to make trips to the pits before returning to the restart at the rear of the field.
On the restart, Matt Stangle won the battle for the lead. Stangle drove away from the field as Gallagher raced several car lengths ahead of the battle for third between Cole Stangle and Martz, Jr. who was followed Billy Osmun III.
As the first half of the race progressed, Matt Stangle’s lead grew. He would be exiting turn two before the field entered turn one. Then it was nearly a straightaway lead that Stangle had over Gallagher, Cole Stangle, Martz and Osmun at the crossed flags.
Cole Stangle and the No. 20c began to close on Gallagher and Martz was feeling the pressure of Osmun and Ryan Krachun behind him. On lap nineteen, Cole Stangle went to the outside of Gallagher and grabbed the lead upon exiting turn two.
One lap later, Matt Stangle caught the back of the field.
With five to go, it was evident that Cole Stangle was closing in on the leader. But would he have time? Matt Stangle’s lead had been six seconds. By lap twenty-six, it was the Stangle family race for the lead as slide jobs and cross-overs with Matt out in front.
It came down to the final lap. The two cars exited turn four and it was a drag race to the checkered with Cole Stangle on the inside and in the lead as the pair crossed the finish line side-by-side.
Jim Gallagher, Jr. finished third followed by Sammy Martz, Jr. and Billy Osmun. Ryan Krachun finished sixth followed by Neal Williams, David Hunt, Sam Martz, Sr. and last week’s winner, Dillon Steuer.
Cole Stangle talked about his battle with Martz, a long-time friend, and how they raced side by side, lap after lap without ever touching. The feature winner praised his father for the hard work and dedication that made it all possible and for the addition of Fast Four Shocks to their racing program.
The DCB’s Plumbing and Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series (MASS) put on another great feature event which saw Dave Brown become the first repeat winner in MASS competition with his win his second win of the season overall.
Larry McVay and Jared Kreider led the field to the start of the twenty-five lap feature event with McVay taking the early lead.
There was plenty of three wide action behind McVay and Kreider as Dave Brown, Eddie Wagner and Buddy Schweibinz battled for position with Troy Betts and Kevin Nagy quickly racing into this mix.
The leaders had caught the back of the field by lap ten. Kreider made a great move for the lead, choosing the right line around the lapped cars while McVay battled for a clear track. Kreider’s success was short-lived as he made hard contact in turns three and four and brought out the caution.
McVay was back out in front on the restart with Brown, Schweibinz, Wagner and Betts trailing. Betts took over third on lap thirteen and then challenged Brown for second. Brown held down second in spite of the three car battle with Betts and Schweibinz.
Several single car cautions marked the final laps and the single file restarts made for some exciting racing. Brown challenged for the lead on lap twenty-four and took the white flag as the race leader. Brown raced to the checkered over McVay, Nagy, Schweibinz and Betts. Tim Iulg raced from 18th to finish sixth followed by Wagner, Jon Brennfleck, Rick Stief and Tim Tanner.
Jim Wyers was the early race leader in the Ice Less 602 Sportsman. A lap five restart saw a three car duel for the lead with Wyers, Jax Yohn and Travis Hill. Hill had just taken the lead when the caution waved, negating his efforts. Hill made it stick when he grabbed the lead again on a lap nine restart.
After being involved in an earlier caution, Brian Papiez raced his way into the top five. The final laps saw the battle for the lead centered around Hill, Papiez and Yohn with Hill taking the win – his second of the 2024 season. This win fell on the birthday of Bill Hill – Travis and Jesse’s father who lost his battle to cancer in December of 2012.
Papiez finished second followed by Yohn, Ethan Bill and Jim Wyers. Billy Chester finished sixth with Ethan Young, Brian Rogers, Michael Beckett and Pete Serra rounding out the top ten.
Mike Hughes raced to the win in the Janney Electric Street Stocks for his fifth win of the season and second with Crate power under the hood. Hughes was able to pull away from the field and the heated battle for second. Jeff Dirkes was the winner of that battle after Nick Sandone III was sidelined with an electrical issue. Gary Bozowski finished third followed by Spider Ensinger III and Terry Chaney.

MANNING OUT DUELS THE FIELD FOR SECOND WIN OF THE SEASON IN BRIDGEPORT MODIFIEDS
Just one month ago, Roger Manning scored his first feature win in the Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modifieds at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park. Twelve different drivers have won Modified features so far this season but Roger Manning is the first to repeat in this competitive division, scoring his second win in just a month!
Saturday night’s races were sponsored by AllState Auto Glass, the family business of sprint car competitor, Bob DeVault. The five division show also included the fifth win of the season for Brian Papiez in the Ice Less LLC 602 Sportsman. Mike Hughes tried something new under the hood of his No. 18 Street Stock and found a winning combination. Dave Grube kept the string of single winners alive in the DCB’s Plumbing & Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series (MASS) while Brian Spencer made it three in a row in the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints.
Manning has an interesting, although, perhaps frustrating, record so far this season. He has won every race that he’s finished. The next race following his first win, Manning was a casualty in an on-track incident, forcing him out of the feature event before the checkered. One week later, his “winning” engine expired as a result of a very unusual part failure. “We’ve either won or been crashed or something broke,” Manning stated. He’d like to be finishing races! “The second win feels as good as the first,” Manning added after his second win.
Manning did not have an easy thirty lap win as he was pressured by Billy Osmun III during the first half of the race and then Sam Martz for the second half of the thirty lap feature event. He didn’t know who is challenger was until a caution flag around half way when Martz lined up to his outside. Osmun pitted under the caution leaving Martz to challenge for the win.
It was Manning all of the way in the Design for Vision No. 414 with Martz taking second. Frank Cozze won the battle with Neal Williams for third while Osmun rebounded from his mid-race issues to finish fifth. Current point leader, Billy Pauch, Jr. finished sixth followed by Ryan Krachun, Stan Frankenfield, Dillon Steuer in a second No. 51 and Thomas Prychka.
In a true show of sportsmanship, the Krachuns offered the No. 29 to Matt Stangle after a heat race crash sidelined his regular mount. The Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz No. 51 crew put Steuer in their second car when mechanical issues sidelined the No. 6D early in the night. Krachun and Steuer raced side-by-side for many laps at one point in the race.
Brian Papiez raced Steve Kemery to the checkered for his fifth win of the season. Ethan Young led the first three laps before Kemery took over on lap four. Papiez was already up to second and raced into the lead on lap seven but Kemery didn’t allow him to drive away from the field. Kemery made several attempts to regain the lead but Papiez was prepared with a counter move each time. Steve Davis, behind the wheel of Howie Finch’s second entry, raced into third late in the race and kept pace with Papiez and Kemery. Joe Toth had his best Bridgeport run of the season to finish fourth after starting mid-pack while Clay Butler made a late race charge to finish fifth. Matt Peck finished sixth after running among the top five for most of the race. Craig Pellegrini finished seventh followed by Travis Hill, Ethan Bill and Billy Chester.
Papiez declared that he is preparing for the $10,000 race coming later in the season.
Troy Betts led the first lap before Bob DeVault took the lead on lap two in the DCB’s Plumbing and Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series feature event. With DeVault’s AllState Auto Glass as the evening sponsor, it looked like DeVault was going to get double billing until DeVault got caught up with slower traffic and got the No. 4 upside down in turn four. DeVault was not injured but his bid for victory ended just before half way.
Betts led the field to the restart but it was Dave Grube who raced into the lead to score lap thirteen. Christian Rumsey battled with Betts for second, securing the runner-up spot in the final ten laps.
Grube led the way to the checkered for the first win of the season for the Racer X team. Grube has competed in several other MASS events this season, finding the High Banks to his liking. Rumsey finished second followed by Betts, Ryan Stillwaggon and Tim Iulg who was the race’s Hard Charger. Dave Brown, Jon Brennfleck, Eddie Wagner, Mark Bitner and Phil Meisner completed the top ten at the checkered.
Mike Hughes returned to Champion Brands Victory Lane and was a little surprised at his results. With numerous engine issues sidelining the No. 18 several times this season, Hughes took the advice of Dave Adams and had a 602 Crate Motor under the hood for Saturday’s race. Hughes led all fifteen laps but was chased to the checkered by Duncan Molesworth who resolved his own mechanical demons prior to Saturday’s competition. It was Molesworth’s best finish of the season. Spider Ensinger, Sr finished third followed by Nick Sandone and Kyle Saylor. Spider Ensinger, Jr. finished sixth followed by Darren Cox, Kevin Heckman, Jason Treat and Jeff Dirkes.
Brian Spencer has made up for a string of seconds earlier this season by taking his third consecutive win in the Victory Fuel Wingless Sprints. Matt Peck led the race for ten laps before Spencer took the lead on lap eleven. Chris Allen, Jr. took second in the closing laps with Peck finishing third for his best effort to date. Jonathan Swanson finished fourth with Stan Ploski III rounding out the top five after a heated battle with Shea Wills for the position.
